“Back to studies on Monday!”

The Hornchurch wits do make me laugh at times, but no amount of student-taunting could save them from defeat at the hands of Team Bath, or spare us the agony of a turgid game. Bamos has already covered the moving tribute to Harry Martin, and I can’t improve on his sentiments – not least because as three o’clock approached I was still shuffling around Covent Garden on a fruitless shopping quest and wondering whether “they were walking far too slowly” would stand up in court as a reason for assaulting someone.

It did sound like an incredible moment, which I’m sorry to have missed.

Anyway, I eventually made it to the ground, in time to see Bath’s Sean Cranham score the game’s only goal and put the Urchins out of the competition. Watching the draw in the bar afterwards was pretty tense, as even those of us without an irrational hatred of Carlisle had no real wish to schlep up there come November 10th, but the Fates saw fit to send us to Bath for an encounter with the mighty Chasetown FC. No, me neither. Staffordshire, apparently.

Bizarrely, both teams are nicknamed The Scholars – Team Bath because they’re the university side, and Chasetown because of the club’s links to nearby Chase Terrace High School. I look forward to two rival sets of fans shouting “Come on the Scholars!” with hilarious consequences.
